Irving Copper Roofing builds copper bay window roofs and other accent roofs in Irving: hoods over front doors, small porch roofs, dormers, turrets and cupolas set into a shingle or tile roof. Every piece is shaped to its frame and flashed into the wall or the roof above it.

An accent puts copper where people see it up close without re-roofing the house. Our service area also covers Coppell and University Park.

Copper accent roof options

Bay window roofs

Angled and box bays have small roofs with hips or a curved front, and a low pitch may call for flat seam pans soldered together rather than standing seams; steeper bays can take standing seam. Where the bay roof meets the wall, counterflashing tucked into the brick or behind the siding carries water over the top edge. A copper bay roof that leaks at that joint calls for repair, not removal of the copper.

Entry awnings and porch roofs

A copper hood over a front door or window hangs on brackets or is framed into the wall, and a small porch roof sits on posts. Both drop water straight down at the drip line, so it helps to decide where it lands: on the steps, a walk or a planting bed. A short copper gutter can carry it to one side.

Dormers and turrets

Barrel and eyebrow dormers and conical turret roofs need copper cut and formed into tapered or curved pans, because straight panels will not follow the shape. The cheeks and face of a dormer can be clad in copper as well. These pieces take more shop and hand work than a flat plane of the same size.

Cupolas and finials

Ready-made copper cupolas and finials are sold widely; the service here is fitting one. A cupola base is cut to the roof pitch and flashed so the ridge underneath stays dry, and the cupola can be vented or purely decorative. We install cupolas and finials you buy or have made rather than selling them.

Matching copper to the main roof

Copper next to shingle, tile or painted metal needs a few precautions. Copper corrodes aluminum and galvanized steel that it touches or drains onto, so fasteners, gutters and flashing below an accent are chosen to suit.

Color is the other question. Valley Ranch’s 2011 guidelines specify dark shingle colors and flashing painted to match the wall, so a bare copper bay or entry hood there needs approval from the Architectural Review Committee first; check the current version of the rules with the association.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add copper to just the bay window?

Yes. A bay window roof is a stand-alone job: the old covering comes off, the deck is checked, and the copper is flashed into the wall and the roof above. If you live in an HOA, include it in an application, since copper changes the color of that part of the house.

Does an accent roof need a permit in Irving?

Irving requires building permits to alter or repair a structure, and its permit page names roof repairs exceeding 100 square feet. A small bay or hood may fall below that size, so ask the city through its MGO portal whether your project needs one.

Accent roofs pair well with copper gutters and downspouts and, on larger houses, with standing seam copper roofing over the main planes. For a bay or hood that already leaks, see copper roof repair and hail damage.
