Irving Copper Roofing makes and installs copper chimney caps and flashing in Irving: made-to-measure caps for masonry chimneys, shrouds and chase covers for framed chimneys, and the step flashing, counter flashing and crickets where a chimney meets the roof.

The cap protects the top of the chimney, and the flashing keeps water out at the roof line. Our service area covers Irving and nearby Coppell and University Park.

Copper chimney work

Custom chimney caps and shrouds

A custom cap is measured for the crown of a single- or multi-flue masonry chimney and can be hipped, pitched or arched. A shroud is a decorative cover over the top of a prefabricated flue in a framed chase. Clearances, spark screens and flue compatibility follow the flue maker’s instructions and your chimney sweep’s advice; we build the copper to suit them.

Chase covers

A framed chimney chase is topped with a metal pan that keeps rain out of the chase and away from the flue pipe. A copper chase cover takes the place of a galvanized or stainless one and will not rust. It is formed with a raised center or a slope so water runs off, and the flue collar is sealed to the pan.

Step and counter flashing

Chimney flashing comes in two parts. Step flashing is woven in with each course of shingles along the sides of the chimney, and counter flashing is set into a mortar joint in the brick and folded down over it. When a roof is replaced, the reroofing code Irving posts calls for flashings to be reconstructed, so a new roof is the time to switch to copper.

Chimney crickets

A cricket is a small ridged diverter on the uphill side of a wide chimney that splits water around it instead of letting it pond against the brick. A copper cricket is soldered and tied into the step flashing. Next door in Coppell, roof permit inspectors check the flashing and crickets around chimneys from the ground.

Copper next to brick and stone

Copper runoff can stain light brick, stone and mortar and corrode galvanized or aluminum parts below it, so drip edges and the path water takes down the chimney are worked out first. In Valley Ranch, the guidelines require flashing to be painted to match the surface it attaches to; ask the Architectural Review Committee before leaving copper flashing bare.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a new chimney cap when I replace the roof?

Not necessarily. The flashing has to be rebuilt with a new roof, but the cap sits on the chimney crown and is a separate decision. If the existing cap is sound, it can stay.

Can copper flashing be used with a shingle roof?

Yes. Copper step and counter flashing work with asphalt shingles, and the copper will weather to brown against them. Check HOA rules first, since some, Valley Ranch among them, ask for flashing painted to match the wall.

Replacing the whole roof? See standing seam copper roofing. For leaks around an existing copper chimney, see copper roof repair and hail damage, and for drainage that matches, copper gutters and downspouts.
