Irving Copper Roofing installs standing seam copper roofing in Irving, replacing shingle, tile or worn metal roofs with copper pans that are joined by raised seams and held to the deck by concealed clips. A job takes in the tear-off, underlayment, copper flashing at walls, valleys and the chimney, and edge trim formed from the same sheet.

Before an HOA application goes in, we help owners compare seam methods and copper weights, since both change the look and the price. Our service area also covers nearby Coppell and University Park.

Standing seam copper roof options

Mechanically seamed panels

On a main roof plane, the pans are joined with seams folded on site by a seaming tool, as a single or double lock. The fold locks neighboring pans together without relying on sealant. The seam detail changes with roof slope, and lower slopes call for the tighter, more weathertight seam. Field seaming takes more time on the roof but suits long runs and broad hip roofs.

Snap-lock panels

Snap-lock pans have one leg that clicks over the next, so they go on faster and need no seaming tool. They fit steeper, smaller planes such as dormer cheeks, porch roofs and short sections between hips. The trade-off is a seam that is not folded closed, which makes snap-lock the weaker choice on shallow or very wide planes.

Flat seam copper for low slopes

A very shallow area, such as a porch roof over a deck or a low section between gables, may need flat seam copper instead: small pans locked together and soldered so the surface works as one watertight sheet. In Valley Ranch, the guidelines set a 6:12 minimum and limit lower slopes to 10 percent of the roof area, so flat seam work there stays to small sections.

16 oz and 20 oz copper

Roofing copper is sold by weight per square foot, and both 16 oz and 20 oz sheet are offered for houses. The 20 oz sheet is thicker and stiffer, which helps on wide pans and exposed edges, and it costs more. Neither weight makes a roof hail-proof, since heavier copper still dents. The chosen weight goes into the written scope.

Tear-off, underlayment and roof deck

Irving posts the code’s reroofing section, and under it a replacement removes the existing layers down to the deck. A recover over an existing roof is allowed in listed cases, including a complete standing seam system that carries roof loads directly to the structure, but not over a water-soaked or deteriorated roof, over slate or tile, or where two or more coverings are already in place.

Once the deck is bare, damaged sheathing is replaced and an underlayment suited to metal roofing goes down. Irving does not require an ice barrier, so the membrane is picked for summer heat under copper rather than for ice.

Wind, hail and the Irving code

Irving’s current code, adopted with local amendments from May 1, 2026, sets a design wind speed of 105 mph (3-second gust) with Exposure C, and clip spacing and the details at eaves, rakes and ridges follow that design. Hail is the other local test: NOAA’s storm database holds 196 hail reports for Dallas County from 2016 to 2025, 160 of them between March and June. Copper dents, and we never describe it as hail-proof or impact rated.

Frequently asked questions

Can a copper roof go over my existing shingles?

Sometimes. The reroofing section Irving posts allows a separate standing seam system over an existing roof in listed cases, but not over two existing layers or a wet or deteriorated roof. Tearing off lets us see and repair the deck, so we decide after inspecting the roof rather than promising either way.

Does my HOA have to approve a copper roof?

In Valley Ranch, yes: its guidelines require committee approval for any roof replacement, and the 2011 version lists shingle colors only; check the current rules with the association. In Las Colinas, ask the Las Colinas Association. Texas law limits HOA rules against certain impact-resistant and solar shingles, but it says nothing about copper.

A new roof is the right time to add copper gutters and downspouts and to rebuild the copper chimney caps and flashing. If you already have a copper roof that leaks or took hail, see copper roof repair and hail damage.
